I read this book aloud. Every evening for an hour or so, spread over several weeks, we settled in for the next episode of the lives in the book. I would highly recommend reading it this way if you can make the time and space. The language is so beautiful that it deserves to be not hurried or skimmed. Another awesome book!! Another super fantastic read from Mr. Attanasio! This is without a doubt one of my favorites. I totally hated reaching the last page and the end of the book. This is my ninth book to read by this author, and I have yet to read anything that he has written that left me feeling let down.
Love it. More true-to-life about real pirates than "Pirates of the Carribean" could ever hope to be. This is really the nitry gritty.
Seems like an epic. Fantastic characters and locales. Great writing. I hardly ever give a 5 star rating but I really loved this story. I t reminded me of Burroughs Tarzan books.
writer is talented however found his style hard to read. challenging pacing with so much packed into a sentence difficult to visualize the plethora of images he is describing. gives much to delight the reader but full of rich description I had sensory overload. like over-salted food, tasty but if less salty would enjoy the individual flavors more.
My first experience with this book was as an impressionable teenager, bright eyed with the possibility that magic still held a place in this world. My second, that of a middle aged husband and father seeking a way to calm my mind and help usher me to sleep. What I have discovered with the passing of years is that my youthful self wasn't wrong. Magic does exist. It lives within the words of these pages and you will most certainly witness it if you let them take you on their journey.
Not A Light Read, But Fascinating Adventure
I wasn't sure I would read this whole book as it was quite long (almost 600 pgs). It really was a great story and might someday rank as a classic. I usually enjoy lighthearted romance or comedy with some sex. This wasn't any of those things. A very strong story that showed much historical research on the part of the author. Very well written. A true adventure with much sadness, gore, and disappointment. The author writes with much heart and keeps us guessing as to the outcome of the many events. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a real adventure story with lots of twists and turns.
So glad to get an eBook of this wonderful book. I already had a paperback and then a hardback, but they are packed up after a move.
